Stanley Whitley, in his _Spanish/English Contrasts_ (p.323) states that the stem-final /k/ in nominal forms becomes /theta/ or /s/ before a derivational suffix beginning with /e/ and /i/, e.g., me'dico --> medicina, ele'ctrico--> electricista. Exceptions to this tendency are diminutives, -i'simo, -ero adn -e (poquito, simpatiqui'simo, vaquero, arranque). Whitley's rule would predict the -i'simo form "catoliqui'simo". I would like to conduct an informal survey of native speakers on the list. Would you say "catoliqui'simo" or "catolici'simo." (I recognize that the preferred way of saying this would be "muy cato'lico". I'm just wondering what the -i'simo form would be IF you said it.)
