    La última cuestión sobre un tema gramatical que se planteó en ESPAN-L entre los meses de marzo y mayo de 1995 fue expuesta por Geoff Hargreaves desde el Canadá, y se refería al género del pronombre indefinido nadie:

My dictionary fails to give a gender for 'nadie' and 'alguien'. "No hablen con nadie desconocido (a)" "Alguien famoso (a) hablo' conmigo." "Alguien famoso por ser puta se me acerco'" "No platiques con nadie notorio por ser mala madre." Are 'nadie' and 'alguien' bi-gendered, according to context? Geoff Hargreaves [9505: 411]

    J.ALCINA-J.M.BLECUA [(1975) 1989, cp. 4.5] denominan alguien, nadie, alguno, ninguno, algo y nada «cuantitativos existenciales», y el primero es «seriable» frente al «cuantitativo existencial no seriable» algo y frente a alguno, que «cubre los dos campos y admite la doble función sustantiva y adjetiva» J.ALCINA-J.M.BLECUA [(1975) 1989, p. 647]; con función negativa se encuentran los tres restantes, nadie -seriable-, nada -no seriable- y ninguno -con doble función-. Sobre alguien y nadie señalan que «no admiten plural» [J.ALCINA-J.M.BLECUA [(1975) 1989, p. 648].

    Esta pregunta dio lugar a cuatro respuestas, todas ellas enviadas desde los Estados Unidos, sobre algunos pronombres que carecen de flexión de género -alguien, nadie, así como quien- y que, por consiguiente, aportan una vaguedad identificadora que es posible eliminar si se acude a uno, una -que, tanto si se consideran formas del artículo indeterminado como del numeral, refieren más directamente a algo caracterizado en cuanto al género:

This is a difficult one. I interpret both as masculine, I think. The sentences you cite do not sound grammatical. Thather than "No hablen con nadie desconocido (a)" I prefer "No hablen con ningun(a) desconocido(a)", or "No hablen con nadie que sea desconocido", in which case I only make masculine agreement. For "Alguien famoso (a) hablo' conmigo." I also accept the masucline agreement only, and then I mean a male. If that person is a female, I would say "Una mujer famosa ..." "Alguien famoso por ser puta se me acerco'" "No platiques con nadie notorio por ser mala madre." In my view, both are ungramatical in that the gender agreement is violated. Again, I would say "Una mujer famosa por ser puta..." and "...ninguna persona notoria por ser mala madre..." Of course, this is the way I intepret these pronouns, but I may be wrong, as I often have been in the past. Alfredo B. Torrejon [9505: 415]

Hello everybody, sorry for not staying i touch before. The thing was, I was so lucky as to have my parents from Spain here in the USA for three weeksas and we have been going around. Boy, what fun we had! In any case, with regards to Nadie/Alguien and their gender, I would like to say the following. First of all, they are pronouns, therfore they stand for whoever/whatever they represent. As such, their gender, if any, depends on the people they stand for. Second, they are *indefinite* pronouns. In ohter words, they are not definite. I think any of these two reasons would explain why we cannot give them any grammatical gender. Of course, this does not mean they cannot be used in a masculine or femenine context. We know they can. And we use them in such a way at every moment. I hope this will clarify something.
